Television personality Rory McGrath has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting harassing a married woman for more than a year.
McGrath, 60, of Grantchester Street, Cambridge, pleaded guilty at Huntingdon Magistrates' Court, in Cambridgeshire.
He had been charged with following the woman, sending electronic messages and approaching her in the street.
McGrath was sentenced to 10 weeks in jail suspended for 18 months.
He was also given a five-year restraining order and ordered to pay £200 in costs.
McGrath originally denied a stalking charge but admitted harassment when the charge was changed.
The offences happened in Cambridge over a 14-month period between June 2015 and August last year.
Prosecutors said McGrath sent letters to the woman's husband.The victim cannot be named for legal reasons.
The TV star has appeared in programmes including BBC panel show They Think It's All Over and comedy documentary Three Men In A Boat.

In Peter Cook's biography there's a lot about McGrath and Cook's football rivalry. Cook was Tottenham and McGrath Arsenal. Depending on results the two would look out for/ avoid each other in Hampstead High Street, hiding behind trees and nipping into shops as necessary.

He had a book published a few years ago titled "Bearded Tit" about his obsession with birdwatching, it appears that "Mental Cunt" would have been more appropriate !

As a comedian, I loved Frankie Howerd. I'm not sure I'd want him standing for a piss next to my son, though.

I've thought for a while that he's a weirdo. A few years back I was in the bar at Kings Cross station about to embark on a lads weekend and he was there with a couple of pals, presumably before getting a train to Cambridge. He was earwigging our conversation and then started staring at me intently. I am extremely BOATY but even so, very strange.
He was great in Who Dares Wins (the TV comedy show) though.

Fruityboots - Yes, well remembered. I heard him on Danny Bakers show and it was both funny and embarrassing.
The bloke is obviously a bit of a wrong 'un, but he is astoundingly clever. Back in its early years he used to be on QI and he always wiped the floor with the other panelists. There seemed to be nothing he didn't know.

Remember him turning up on Danny Bakers radio show on BBC London possibly half cut for an interview, it didn't even last 5 minutes as he dropped in snide/rude comments towards the co presenter Amy Lamé before Danny pulled the plug. He put 3 songs on back to back halfway through McGrath bumbling on and had him removed from the studio. When he came back on air you could hear how angry and disgusted he was at him as he was apologising to the listeners, I think he knocked having guests on that show for a good while after unless they were really good.

That's true you would not, I enjoyed some of his stuff too the Up Pompei film was his best for me, he was also good in carry on too.

Seems it was a woman he had had an affair with for about 5 years.
Got a bit mental when she wanted to end it on the grounds that he was an unpleasant individual.
She later received emails from him and agreed to meet him at his home in July 2015, despite feeling uncomfortable. “He had put a mattress in the front room,” said Mr Abell. “She said ‘in case they wanted to lie down’. He asked her if she was frightened.”
